Steels
RWL-34 is my favourite steel. It is a powder steel made in Sweden. It features a very fine grain structure. With the right heat treat it gets scary sharp and holds the sharpness for a long time. It is fairly easy to sharpen for the user which is something I value. It is somewhat comparable to ATS-34 in composition yet features added Vanadium. This gives it finer grain structure and adds to the edge holding. I use S30V on some of my models or if the customer requests it or if the size needed is not available in RWL-34.
For those dress up knives I like to use Damasteel. Damasteel is a stainless Damascus made from RWL-34 and PMC-27. The later is similar to 12C27.

Heat treat
All my RWL-34, ATS-34 and Damasteel blades gets a professional heat treat by Haustrup, Denmark. This is a company dealing only with heat treating. The blades get hardened in a vacuum furnace and are cryogenically stress relieved at -196 °C (-385 °F). The stress relieve gives 3 benefits:

  1. The wear resistance is greatly increased.
  2. The knife gets a keener edge.
  3. The strength is greatly increased.
The process is very expensive, but it gives you the best knife you could wish for.

Handle materials
G10 is an epoxy sealed, woven-glass composite reinforced with glass fiber. Its even stronger than Micarta and I just love it.

Carbon fibre is a material comparable with Micarta and G10. But the resin is reinforced with woven carbon fibre. Its extremely light.

Micarta is a phenolic resin reinforced with layers of paper or cloth. Its very strong and stable.
